Design New Databases. Part 1: Introduction
The design of a database via data modeling is an important step in the database development process for several reasons:
- Improved accuracy: Data modeling helps to ensure that the database design is accurate and meets what the stakeholders require. By modeling the database, developers can identify potential issues and address them before they become problems.
- Increased Efficiency: By designing a database via data modeling, developers can create a more efficient database structure. This can lead to faster query response times and better overall performance.
- Better communication: Data modeling helps to improve communication between stakeholders, developers, and end-users. By creating a visual representation of the database structure, everyone involved in the project can better understand how one organized the data and how distinct entities relate to each other.
- Improved Scalability: One can scale a well-designed database as the amount of data grows. By designing a database via data modeling, developers can ensure one can scale and extend the database without requiring a complete redesign.
- Easier maintenance: Designing a database via data modeling can make it easier to maintain the database. By creating an organized database structure, developers can more easily change the database and ensure that it remains consistent and accurate.
Watch this video to discover the use of ER/Studio for designing a database. The process involves starting with business data objects, expanding them to a logical data model, and then attributing entities and drawing relationships between them. One then converts the logical design to a physical design aligned with the target data product using ER/Studio’s transformation options. One enriched the physical model with database-specific artifacts and one can deploy it as a data definition language code to a live database. We also discussed updating the database with changes, including using change management tools and the compare and merge tool in ER/Studio
